The extended version:

Hey there, thanks for visiting my website.
Here is some info about me and my passions.

I was born in 1990 in Johannesburg South Africa. Joburg is still home, however, travel is something that I have done locally & internationally, a number of times in my life & I love it!

This is where two of my biggest passions where birthed. From the age of about 5 or 6 (I think), my Dad was a leader at the Africa School of Missions in White River, South Africa. White River is about a 4 hours drive from Joburg and is situated near Nelspruit and the famous Kruger National Park. While my Dad was busy at the Missions school my mother would often take us into the Kruger Park to enjoy the beauty of nature. These trips and my mothers love for the bush & wildlife birthed a great passion in me from a young age.

A few years later at about the age of 11 or 12  on one of these trips to the Kruger, my mom and I spent 6 days in the National Park taking pictures of everything we saw. She taught me the basics of how to use her Pentax film camera. I was hooked! Since then photography has been a huge passion of mine.

At the same age, I started growing my passion for art and completed my first three oil paintings of a Lilly, a mountainous landscape & a Tiger.

At the age of 18, I started learning graphic and web design as I loved to be creative and really enjoyed the idea of making things look better and less cluttered by learning some layout basics and how to use negative space. I spent many hours and late nights learning design programs and web design and loved it!

At 19 I had saved/lent enough money to buy my first Nikon DSLR camera. I loved spending hours taking photos of everything and anything to grow in my new craft. I also did a short photography course at VEGA school which helped me get a good understanding of the basics and foundations of photography.

At that time I also started a graphic and web design company with a friend which didn’t last long as family, studies and freelance work became my main priority.

At the age of 20, I was employed full-time as a web designer and graphic designer at Liberty Church where I currently still work as the Media Manager with a team of about 9 other creatives.

I also have some experience as an entrepreneur. In 2015 at the age of 24 I co-founded At Close Quarters – photographic safaris which was a great opportunity to merge 5 of my passions. Wildlife, Photography, Design, Teaching & Business.  The business took off better than expected and soon grew into a well known brand in South Africa with a team of 4 running our safaris. In 2019 I resigned as Director and sold a large portion of my share in the business.

Today I am an experienced Media manager at Liberty Church, an international church of about 3000 people. I love my job and lead a team of 9 creatives where I get to enjoy working on all kinds of creative projects.

My side hustle joshuamcphail.com also involves many of my passions where I freelance as a Digital Designer, Photographer & Artist.

I hope you enjoy looking through some of my work!
